LinkedIn: What To Post, How Often & Pulse

Chapter 3 in Jason McDonald's "Social Media Marketing Workbook 2016" covered the social media platform of LinkedIn. Facebook and LinkedIn are very similar in structure but have very different cultures. I would describe LinkedIn to a new user as predominately business networking social media platform. Since creating my profile on LinkedIn, I have not made or shared a single post. The main reason for that was because I read a post on my feed where someone was complaining about the posts on LinkedIn and that they weren't a fan of users being able to post. The other reason was because I had no idea what to post or share. This chapter definitely cleared up both of those reasons for me; this is what I learned:

What To Post:

  • Blog Posts: you can post links to your own blog posts or share others that you found
  • Quotes
  • Inforgraphics and Instructographics: factoids, how to posts, top # lists, fun and useful lists or facts, etc.
  • Quizzes, Surveys, Response-provoking Posts: ask questions, ask for feedback on current or old projects or topics, polls, etc. The goal is to encourage and increase interactivity with your followers.

  • THESE POSTS SHOULD BE BUSINESS THEMED (or motivational)

Your goal when posting is to be informational, interesting, useful, fun, friendly to increase your likely-hood of being shared, which would create more connections.

How Often:

  • LinkedIn's feed is extremely crowded and depending on your audience you can post frequently (even multiple times a day). To know how often to post, like Facebook, you can monitor the stats on your posts. You should keep track of how many thumbs ups and comments your posts acquire too.

Pulse: (I had no idea this existed)

  • In summary, Pulse can give you ideas of what to post because the top business influencers and everyday users, like yourself, can make posts that can be shared on Pulse, LinkedIn, and on other social media platforms.
  • It is LinkedIn's internal blog
  • Pulse also allows anyone to follow you, so you are not just limited to your 1st connections like on LinkedIn. This can help create more connections and possibly make your posts go viral.
